Family Favorites Friday: Tea Party Birthday

These lovely ladies are grown up now!

 I don't always have a friends party for my children for their birthday, but when I do, I try to make it special.  For my youngest daughter's 5th birthday, we had a Tea Party Birthday theme.  


Several of her friends attended the party.  When they arrived, they chose a 'fancy dress' (old prom dress) and I pinned the dress on them to fit. 

My husband helped paint their fingernails and toe nails.  A little pampering for the girls!

I had a tea party complete with china cups and saucers, finger sandwiches, chocolate dipped strawberries and a tea pot cake.

I had ordered a birthday tea party kit from Birthday Express that included lace gloves, fake pearls, plastic cup and saucer as well as party invitations and paper goods.  They do not carry that exact kit anymore, but they do have a large collection of themed party products.

For the tea pot cake, I made two cakes and cooked them in oven safe glass bowls.  I cooked some batter in a cupcake tin to make the lid.  For the handle and the spout, I tinted sugar cookie dough pink, rolled it out, cut out the shape and baked it.

To assemble the cake:  Put the two cake layers together with frosting.  Cut an opening in the 'teapot' to insert the spout and the handle into.  Put frosting in the hole and insert the handle and spout.  With a serrated knife, cut the cupcake to the desired lid handle shape.

Frost and decorate the cake as desired.

I chose a rambling vine with pink flowers for my decoration.

Fast forward 10 years to this past summer when my daughter had her 15th birthday.  I always ask the birthday day girl or boy what kind of cake they want; she requested a tea pot cake.  She was a little more specific on the flavor and frosting this time.

As you can see in the photo, the frosting is strawberry.

I cut the handle and spout out of a cake layer, this time.  I did cut a hole in the 'teapot' to insert the handle and spout, but also used toothpicks to help hold them in place.

It really isn't very difficult to make a teapot cake and it sure makes the little (and big) girls very happy!  Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
