5 Children's Books You Should Read

 

 I read many, many books to my children.  Some of the books we owned, some we checked out from the church library or the public library, and some were from my husband’s childhood.  While we read many of the classic favorites, there are some that are not as well known that I 
 think you and your children would enjoy.

Donkey-Donkey 
This book is about a donkey who does not like his ears.  He gets advice from all the farm animals about how to improve the looks of his ears.  In the end, it is the mama pig who gives him the best advice.  Donkey, Donkey has fun illustrations and a lesson for us all.

"Stand Back," Said the Elephant, "I'm Going to Sneeze!"

This is a humorous book written in rhyme.  A little mouse is asking the elephant not to sneeze because of the dire consequences to all of the other animals.  Can you imagine what happens when an elephant lets loose an elephant-sized sneeze?  “A lot of us will fall on our bottom-us.”

Never Tease a Weasel
 Another book written in rhyme and rhythm that teaches a great lesson.  “Never tease a weasel. A weasel will not like it and teasing is not nice.”  The book goes on to give ideas of nice things to do for the weasel and other animals.  This book has been re-printed with new illustrations.
   
Joe the Bear and Sam the Mouse  

 I have fond memories of my father-in-law reading this book to my children. Joe and Sam spend the whole book trying to find something that they can both enjoy together.  In the end, they find an activity that they can enjoy together every day.  I think this book is out of print, but it is a lovely book, if you can find it. ( I just realized that the actual title of this book is How Joe the Bear and Sam the Mouse Got Together.  The way the title is printed on the book, the first word and last two words get lost.)

 
A Porcupine Named Fluffy

 When we received this in the mail from a book club, I read it to the boys immediately even though it was naptime.  We laughed and laughed. This book is hilarious!  The illustrations of poor “Fluffy” trying to live up to his name are very well done.
